Walter Reed National Naval Medical Center Replacement Hospital, Bethesda, MD Site Construction Cost: $641.1 Million Nature of Firm's Responsibility: Construction Materials Testing and Inspection Services Completion Date: 2011 Description: The new Walter Reed National Medical Center will merge the duties of the existing Army facility in Washington with the operations of the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. When construction is completed in 2011, the 6.7 million-square-feet facility will have 345 beds. It will merge the resources of the Army, Navy and Air Force, and make it easier for medical professionals from all three services to collaborate and treat patients. Building A consists of a concrete frame of one story below grade and six (6) stories above grade of approximately 520,000 GSF. Building B consists of a partial concrete and structural frame with composite deck of one story below grade and four (4) stories above grade totaling approximately 162,000 GSF. The patient garage is a pre-cast structure of 7 stories. Hillis-Carnes is providing testing and inspection services during the development to include: utilities, retaining walls, concrete pavement and asphalt pavement and other sub-grades; soils related to site work and foundation construction; caissons; reinforcing steel related to foundation construction; cast-in-place concrete; intermittent masonry; structural steel / welds; fireproofing and floor flatness and levelness testing.
